B-3 jackets were introduced in 1934, with the first designs being simpler than WWII models. The earlier jackets were often made in redskin, rather than the darker sheepskin used in WWII. The earlier jackets had a two-piece back which joined the front under the arms, and the WWII version had a three-piece back and a strip of sheepskin that joined front and back under the arms. Some early examples had no horsehide sleeve support, and some were not tanned to a dark color, being almost white. Often on WWII jackets, splicing of the sheepskin can be seen to make larger pieces.
