California Sportwear Series: "Californian" Racer

California Sportwear Ventura » Black horsehide Racer

California Sportwear was a leather jacket producer from the 1930s to the 1980s. They made many different styles of jackets and other garments, and examples can be found that are quite beautiful. This jacket is a copy of a California Sportwear Cafe Racer, which was first made popular by the Joseph F. Buegeleisen Company just after WWII. The design is simple and slender. Our pattern is comfortable in the shoulders and upper chest, and has a slender lower torso and sleeve ends.

Our black horsehide has a pigment finish, and looks superb in comparison to black moto jackets of the period. The horsehide is veg-tanned, and is 1.1 - 1.2mm in thickness. It feels dense and heavy, but wears comfortably.

We offer several zipper choices. We have reproduction nickel main zippers that come with original Talon sliders from 1943. The chest zippers are copies of Talons of the period, but our zippers are branded as Waldes. The sleeve end zippers are original period Talons. We have vintage new old-stock brass zippers as well (not shown).

The lining is black 100% rayon, and the collar has nickel Ligne 24 ring snaps. The only pockets are the two chest pockets, but with a customer requests, we can apply a snap-closure vertical pocket in the leather facing of the lining for an additional charge.

Our pattern is a more simple design of early Cafe Racer jackets. We choose to offer this pattern as seen, rather than the more complex patterns seen on later Cafe Racer jackets, such as a bi-swing back and hand-warmer pockets, or padding in the elbows and shoulders. We prefer the early historic design.

Details of this jacket:
  • slender motorcycle jacket design
  • comfortable shoulders and upper sleeves
  • short vertical collar with snap closure
  • two chest pockets
  • black rayon lining
  • vintage and reproduction zippers available
  • sleeve ends with zipper openings
This is a beautiful rendition of a 1940s motorcycle racing jacket, offered from Good Wear Leather in black horsehide leather.
