Type A-2: Star Sportswear 42-18245-P
Star Sportswear, based in Lynn, Massachuessetts, was a prolific leather jacket contractor. They offered their services to the Army Air Forces and
U.S. Navy from WWII through the 1980s. Their Type A-2 jacket has a number of very unique details in comparison with other WWII A-2 contractors.
The Star pattern is somewhat trim arount the waist, but very comfortable, because they designed the upper back to be wider than other A-2s. The inset sleeves afford excellent
arm motion, so much so that the sleeves don't pull up much when sitting and reaching forward. The collar is cut lower in the front, and stays clear
of the wearer's chin when sitting as well. We have copied every construction detail that our original Star Sportwear A-2 displays, and we're confident that
a Star A-2 will be a pleasure to wear.
Star originals were commonly made with either semi-aniline finish horsehide or pigment finish horsehide. The original we have
is pigment, but the most common finish appears to be semi-aniline, which our reproduction has. The semi-aniline jackets
were mostly a dark russet shade, though seal brown tones have also been noted.
Details of this contract:
- horsehide in semi-alinine russet and seal brown or russet pigment
- simple collar construction
- very roomy upper back/shoulder area
- inset sleeves, which are snug in the ends
- unique triangle stitching in top of pocket body
- separate leather tab for snaps in pocket body
- dull mid-brown lining
- ball stud snaps, small in collar, larger in pockets
- mid-brown or dark brown knits
- brass eyelets for throat clips
- wartime 1942 model Talon zippers
This jacket has a rather modern fit and is snug and comfortable.
