Introduction

The Type A-2 leather flight jacket is an American clothing and design classic. While the A-2 is most closely associated with World War II, its active life began with standardization in 1931. Often referred to today as a "bomber" jacket, its official designation was as "Jacket, Pilot's (summer)" and its usage was restricted to neither pilots nor bomber crews.

The A-2 maintains a strong presence to this day due to its rugged simplicity and to an undying aura of triumph and tradition. The collectibility of original A-2's is a worldwide phenomenon and is reflected in the steep prices many are willing to pay for them. Besides, an A-2 just flat out looks cool.

This primer is written for those who want to know more about the A-2 and can't seem to find much in the way of reference material. This is not an exhaustive study by any means but it does cover many details and topics which may often be overlooked. A bibliography is provided for further exploration.

As a further matter of clarification, readers should be aware that this treatment deals specifically with the original A-2 of the 1930's and 1940's and not the modern version.
