We have a new format of goatskin. We've known of the tannery's product since 2017, but didn't know the name of the tannery (through a reseller
of leather, which usually will not reveal tanneries). A shipment had a small scrap of paper with the tannery name, and we immediately contacted
them to have a custom-tanned shipment of seal brown made. They have several formats of grain, and this was a medium-level, which is
on the more extreme end of WWII goatskin. But, it's so beautiful, for several reasons.
The hides are soft, but have good weight. Each hide is quite large, making the cutting of panels and details more efficient (small goatskin hides
are very difficult to use, as too much of the hide is wasted with unusable small bits). The finish is strong, but will show wear with lots of use on
the high points. The smell is wonderful, typical of well-tanned leather.
We love the Willis and Geiger M-422 pattern. It has a sharp design, is comfortable, and the graceful curve of the pocket flaps give it
a great well-designed look. The collar isn't too big, which is noticeable with other earlier Navy jackets.
We've handled a good number of Willis & Geiger originals, from the M-422 series to M-422A, AN-6552s, and AN-J-3As.
The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'11" to 6'1", with a chest of 42" to 44", and a weight of about 180-205 pounds.
