The idea was to wash the capeskin hides before assembly, and see what kind of aged effect this leather would show. We are happy with the results, and this jacket, which has about a week of wear in it, shows what the hides look like after a bit of tough motion. The skins get a little thicker from the wash, and the finish more of a pronounced surface wear after being washed and dried. We did have trouble with the first button hole, which is the lowest on the front panel. One half of the button hole thread didn't catch correctly, so we hand-sewed that part. Note the photo below. The rest of the botton holes came out perfectly. Our button holer machine dates to the 1950s (a Reece 101), and it sometimes needs a bit more adjustment. Even when they were new, they were complicated machines to operate, from what we have read through government books on garment production plants. We tested and adjusted the machine after that first button hole. Otherwise, the jacket looks very much like a vintage one, and after even more wear, will only look more so. The capeskin will get shine on the edges that have the most buffing from motion, and more wrinkles will develope in areas that are pulled and twisted from regualr use.
