This jacket is in near-new condition, and has all original parts. We believe this is either a commercial-market product made with contract Navy jacket parts, or possibly a small run of jackets made for the Navy before a contract was started. We've handled several other jackets with this exact label, and each were made exactly as the contract Star Sportswear jackets were made. The four details that deviate from a contract jacket are these: there's no USN stamp on the back of the collar, the Conmar zipper has a straight pull tab, rather than a bell shape, and the buttons are of a horn-like swirly brown, not solid brown. Star's 39943 contract label would have three more lines of text, the contract number, and Star's name, and then the city. Note that the typeface and format of label are identical to the contract labels Star had made. It was common for contractors who made Navy or Air Force jackets to receive a significant amount of extra materials to complete the contract (in case of any errors during construction), and what was left over once the contract was complete could be used at the contractors discretion. Often, they would keep making the exact same item, but sell through catalogs and other marketing channels. The rest of this jacket is identical to what Star made. And the great detail with this one is the condition. It's extremely rare to find any Navy jacket in this condition, near new in all respects. We could list the details, but the photographs tell a better story. One cuff has two small darns, but the knits are otherwise amazing. The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'10" to 6'2", with a chest of 42" to 45", and a weight of about 185-210 pounds.
