This jacket is an original M-444 from WWII, and it is in great condition. This is a wearable jacket, but we would
suggest that it's done with common-sense (i.e. please don't play football wearing it). We aren't 100% sure of whom
made the jacket, but we believe that it's an H.L.B. Corp. production, and they often used durable sheepskin. Many
original Navy sheepskin jackets have done poorly with the test of time (the tanning process is the problem), but
some companies received better sheepskin than others.
The jacket would fit someone in the range of 5'11" to 6'2", and around 200 pounds in weight. The shoulders fit
perfectly as worn in the photos below (check the measurements of both the jacket and the wearer), and the lower
torso is a little bit roomy, which is a design feature for sheepskin trousers to be used in conjunction with
the jacket.
The jacket is all original with the exception of the label. We applied one of our Fried-Ostermann labels, only
because the general consensus is that if any label can be applied, then most likely someone would ask us to apply
it. We do not have any H.L.B. Corp. labels (we do not plan on copying this particular jacket), so we chose the one
that we do have. If this is troublesome to a buyer, it can easily be removed.
The jacket had a few stitch lines fixed up, but otherwise, it is in great condition. The sheepskin is soft, strong,
and very flexible, and the stitching throughout feels very solid. We have had this jacket for five years, and it
has been just fine through that time. The hidden wool cuffs in the sleeve ends are original and in fine condition.
The original blackened brass M-39 Talon works perfectly as well. There is some crazing (cracking of the finish paint
on the surface of the sheepskin) in very small amounts here and there, but it isn't anything that we care about.
This is natural for sheepskin painted brown for WWII jackets.
There is only the slightest odor of the original tanning process, which is pleasant. The jacket isn't dirty or
displeasurable in any manner. We cannot stress enough that a jacket of this size and design is extremely
hard to find. They are rare, having been made in small numbers.
