This is a fascinating jacket from WWII. It was made by Gordon & Ferguson around the time of their U.S. Navy
AN-J-3A contract, and has all the details of one, but it never had a label, nor a US or USN stamp on the collar.
The jacket was given to an employee of the Glen Martin Co., a pilot, so we could assume that it's possible that
some jackets were made for the company by G&F in a small private purchase. We have a similar civilian copy of a
Willis & Geiger AN-J-3A that has a company, rather than government label, and we think that jackets were made after
contract completion from overstock material, as items for the civilian market.
The jacket is in wonderful condition. The bad—the waistband has two areas of darning in a correct thread color,
and the goatskin has some slight wear to the surface on the back of the sleeve along the seams, but the goatskin
should have that kind of edge wear 70 years after production. Only one cuff has a tiny ding, the lining is basically perfect, and
the zipper is superb. The mouton has a few tiny areas of thin fur, but is holding just fine.
The jacket is quite comfortable, with solid, heavy leather. Someone in the height and weight range listed below
would fit the jacket perfectly. All the details of the jacket are identical to how Gordon & Ferguson would have made
their small AN-J-3A contract, so it's quite interesting and rare. For the zipper, note the number 4 in the middle of the
stopper. This definitely signifies that the zipper was produced in 1944. We didn't realize that this design was still
being made that late in the war. We have some label options for those who may be interested in applying one later.
The only odor the jacket has is a subtle and beautiful smell of the original tanning method. It's quite pleasant.
