One customer gave it a try, but it was a bit snug in the torso for him. A good friend and customer told us about a source for goatskin which we'd not seen before. We bought russet and seal brown skins, and they are magnificent, among the best goatskins we've ever handled. To say we're happy is an understatement. We've made a sample Dubow A-2 and then this jacket, which is a sample of the seal brown. Their color is very close to vintage 1950s U.S. Navy G-1 jackets, which is why we chose to make a Cagleco Sportswear model. The hides are very soft, but dense and have great weight. We believe the skins are chrome-tanned, and they're certainly dyed through the whole skin, just as 1950s goatskin was. It can be seen in the pull tab on the zipper below. Veg-tanned leather tends to sit with a flatter, stiffer hand, but these skins are butter soft. The dyed color and finish on these hides was done exquisitly as well, with just the right amount of sheen. This jacket is unused, but we would love to see this leather after three months of wear. It will become almost indistinguishable from vintage goatskin of a well-worn jacket. We have just finished a customer's G-1 jacket made with russet from this source which we dyed a lighter seal color. These photographs show how well this goatskin takes dye, and we plan on lighter seal jackets being made with the russet color and our dyeing system. We developed our pattern from a rough original Cagleco which we took apart. They had several subtle variations in patterns through their many contracts, but this one copies an earlier contract, and has a very athletic design. Big shoulders, fairly snug hips, and the one detail we love about Cagleco G-1s is that the pockets are close to the zipper. This keeps the stomach-area flattened. When pockets are spaced far from the zipper, the stomach area of Navy jackets tends to protrude outward. Several contractors had pockets close to the zipper, and we like this. The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'10" to 6'1", with a chest of 41" to 43", and a weight of about 185-210 pounds.
