Sometimes we find leathers in a rather serendipitous manner. We found this goatskin recently from one source, and then found out via stamps on the back of the leather the name of the tannery. We like this goatskin, and hope we can offer it in regular stock in the future. Note how with typical wear, the finish shows wear as some vintage jackets would do, somewhat like tea-core. The goatskin is heavy, and though a little stiff, it's comfortable when worn.

L.W. Foster started making Navy jackets with their AN-J-3A contract, and then made 55J14 G-1s, finally ending with the MIL-J-7823(AER) contract which was massive. Their early pattern is somewhat extreme, with very big shoulders, and tight hips. We have had many originals, and our pattern is from a solid 55J14 of this early design. This is the same pattern Tom Cruise wears in the 1986 Top Gun movie (he wears an original, not a period copy), and the shoulders were so big on him, they used shoulder pads inside to fill out the leather.

Our Foster jackets come with all the typical details originals would have, from the knits to the rayon lining, and the classic USN stamp on the back of the collar. They had three styles, but this one is our favorite. The zipper is a blackened Conmar, and the mouton is vintage.

Foster was an early adopter of a less common pattern feature with Navy jackets at this time...having the torso seam under the arms, rather than farther back as most Navy jackets would have. As a result, the back panel is quite wide, from the shoulders down to the hips. This required larger goatskin hides to resolve. The majority of Navy jacket makers from WWII to 1960 would have more narrow back panels, making cutting of the upper back panels easier with smaller skins, but larger front panels which extend around past the armpits.

The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'9" to 5'11", with a chest of 40" to 41.5", and a weight of about 160-185 pounds.
