This jacket is one of John's personal jackets. It's made with a light goatskin (same tannery as the Doniger in the sale
section), finished in dark seal brown. The jacket has patches that refer to his own family and his service in the Navy.
The jacket pattern came from this particular Foster 55J14.
This jacket is a bit tight in the lower torso, as was the original. If you are close in sizing to what John wears,
but are OK with a slightly tighter lower torso, this should fit just fine. The rest of the jacket fits well, though
more on the size of snug than roomy.
The Seabees patch represents John's time in the Seabees (eight years in three units). The USS Okinawa patch is for his uncle,
who was a plank-owning officer of the Okinawa crew, and the Coast Guard patch is for his grandfather, who was a captain
in the Coast Guard. This jacket gets comments all the time when worn - many have said "That's a great jacket!", and we believe
it's because of the patches, as unpatched jackets don't get the same level of comments.
The button holes were made using a single-needle sewing machine. Our button hole machine isn't operating as needed, and we're in the
process of buying a modern button hole sewing machine. They are incredibly expensive ($10K would be a good deal on one), and we
think that's the best machine for what we do, as the vintage machines we have (3 units) require too much management to justify
their use. We used the button hole machine with no thread, and then filled in the stitch holes with the single needle machine.
