This jacket is a vintage G-1 from the late 1940s, made for Flying Equipment Co. The company that made this is actually
Star Sportswear, of Lynn, MA, as the details between Flying Equipment Co. jackets that we've seen are identical to the
contract 55J14 jackets made by Star. We've handled many F.E.C. G-1s, and they are dead-on accurate for Star.
The body pattern is just like Star (narrow back panel, wide front panels, shoulder seam lies far back). amd
the goatskin is identical to several Star's we've recently handled. Note the great patina.
We believe that these jackets were first made as a sub-company of Star, to sell off overstock G-1 jackets
made in-house. Often in military contracts, a large quantity of leather, parts and material would be provided—far
more than what was needed to fulfill the contract. The company could do whatever they wanted with the overstock, and in most cases, it seems they would
just keep making jackets, and sell them to distributors or by mail order with a different label. In this case, we think it might have
been through the Navy's PX system. We've seen a number of these jackets with patches and name tags, and that would
be possible if jackets could be purchased through the PX. This particular jacket would have been made later,
though for the same reason. If one does a Google search for Flying Equipment Co. G-1 jackets, this will bear out.
This jacket was used regularly at some point, and has very comfortable goatskin. The grain is just beautiful.
The quality of workmanship is solid, as with most Stars. The lining, which is a dark turquoise color (seen on several
original L.W. Foster and the Breier of Amsterdam G-1 jackets) is in excellent condition, having no tears or other problems.
The mouton is great, plush and full. The waistband is solid, and only has two darns, and the cuffs were
replaced by us in a matching wool shade, and proper nylon thread. The zipper is a 1940s Talon, with slider and stopper painted brown.
No patches or name tags were ever applied to the jacket.
This jacket will ideally fit a person who is 5'9" to 5'11", with a chest circumference of 41-43", and weight of
170-190 pounds.
