We have two new sewing machines which sew the kind of body joints that S. H. Knopf used on their Type D-1 jackets.
As with several other D-1 jacket makers, along with Irvin jackets in England, the seams of the body were sewn with
a flat joint, created with a zig-zag sewing machine. When the tape was applied over the seams, the seam remains
noticeably flat, where fur machine seams leave a ridge under the tape. This jacket is a test of the two new sewing machines,
which also includes a double-needle machine that sews the tape with a 1/4" gap between the needles.
The fur on this ranges between 1/4" and 3/8", and the leather is very comfortable (not stiff). The color is an excellent
seal brown, and the tape over the seams is a dark russet cowhide. The jacket looks new, but with regular use, the grain
will pop quite a bit, and it will have the effect of a well used WWII original. The hanger chain is a type we've seen on
several vintage D-1s (mostly Werber).
We took apart a vintage Knopf D-1 for our pattern, and copied all the details of its construction. The pattern looks great, and
has a very common-sense effect. This test jacket has only about 20 minutes of wear, so it's nearly new.
The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'10" to 6'1" with a chest of 42-44", and a weight of about 185-205 pounds.
