We have been planning for a year to purchase Italian horsehide in a darker shade of russet, with a bit less reddish a tone. We placed our order
earlier this year, and just received this dark russet horsehide. We love the color tone, and would actually prefer this to be our stock russet in the future.
We've made a Bronco A-2 to show what this horsehide is like (and to replace the main Bronco, ten years old on the main part of the site).
The finish is a pigment outer color with aniline dye below, and it looks painfully close to WWII russet of many original A-2s. The horsehide is
1mm thick, and of a somewhat soft hand, so it's quite comfortable. It looks and feels so right! There's plenty of grain, although the Italian horsehide
usually doesn't have large crack-like grain as some other sources of horsehide will have. The Italian tannery avoids using the stomach area.
This Bronco is made with excellent parts to match originals, from vintage United-Carr snaps, to the very pale brown cotton lining (a new product we
now have access to). The thread is a light olive color, just like many original Broncos, and the hanger bar is bar-tacked in their house style.
This jacket also has our new mid-brown knits, which are superb.
Note the wrinkles/folds of the collar. This is very typical of original Broncos, and derives from the shape of the collar and how it relates to the
collar hole in the body. While this jacket has those classic folds, one can use a bit of spray water and shaping to reform the collar to a more flattened
state.
This Bronco has been worn for about an hour, just to get the sleeves to wrinkle a little and not look too puffed up before photography, as new jackets
can look. Though used, it's very lightly used.
The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'10" to 6'1", with a chest of 41" to 42.5", and a weight of about 180-200 pounds.
