This jacket is a wonderful example from the WWII-era, and it was made by American Sportswear Co., of Brigham City, Utah. The jacket is a civilian model, and has a few little details missing from what a military contract jacket would have, and it was originally sold with a label sewn in by hand for The White House, a San Francisco men's retail store.

The jacket is a big size 46, and it's in excellent condition. This is a wearable example, and it not only has all the original parts, sans the label, but it looks great worn. Someone in the right size will have a square-shouldered pattern, heavy goatskin, that 1940s mouton which no company seems to be able to recreate any more, and all original cloth/knit components. If you had an American Sportswear AN-6552 military jacket, it would have exactly the same look, except for the back of the collar.

The goatskin is superb. No flaws of any note, and heavy with a beautiful finish. The lining is completely solid, with only some mild discolorations from light wear. The mouton is great, the knits have a few holes that we darned, but are still excellent, and the Conmar zipper works just as if new. The waistband had two holes where the wearer's right arm would touch their right hip, and you can see how they were darned closed. That part of the waistband is well hidden when wearing the jacket. We're glad the front face and back face of the waistband didnt't have holes like that.

We believe that jacket makers would be provided more than enough material for contracts, with maybe 20-30% extra, in case of any problems, and once a contract was completed, the could keep the extra. Some companies would do other projects, but it would seem that many companies kept making the exact same military jackets but for the civilian market, which gladly bought them up. It would have been easy for the workers to do what they'd been doing.

The collar of the jacket was made without a throat latch, nor matching buttons, and then with only a single sewing line of curved stitching below the alligator teeth stitch lines. Also, the pocket would have a pen slot on military jackets, but this civilian model does not. Otherwise, all the military materials are used in this jacket, and it looks an wears in an identical manner as the size 46 originals we've had in the past from this contract. We applied the reproduction label that you see in it now, and that's the only object we added.

This jacket is 80 years old, and is ready for another 80.

The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'11" to 6'2", with a chest of 42" to 45", and a weight of about 190-220 pounds. The jacket is shown with a wearer who is 6 feet tall with a 41" chest, and it fits oversized and comfortable.
