This jacket is a quick test based on an original Cable Raincoat 27753 of the same size. We were able to borrow a very solid original and
make a pattern and then a test before giving the original back. Seal horsehide was used, though originals are russet from the samples
we've owned or handled (and saved images of which we've not handled). A proper web site example will be made later using russet horsehide
or cowhide. We believe both forms of leather were used on originals.
The last pattern we took from a Cable was back in 2011, and there are subtle differences between this pattern and that one. They're close, but
we've learned much about patterning since then, and it has some interesting differences which we wouldn't have imagined. The collar
is proportionately smaller, and though the shoulders are 19" across, they feel roomy, as the sleeve tops are bigger. Other details are
very close to the jacket we copied in 2011.
The lining fabric is a new product we have from a wonderful source. The quality of cotton fabric we've been able to get from them
has been eye-opening and superb. The thread is a reddish cotton, which most Cable Raincoat originals seem to be sewn with. The snaps
are 1943-made vintage United-Carr line 20 blackened units, exactly the same type used on originals of this contract. Nickel plated
snaps are seen along with these blackened snaps with Cables. The zipper is a reproduction chain with a vintage Kwik slider. A straight
pull tab is most commonly seen, but this fantail format is a bit easier on the fingers.
The fit of Cable Raincoat jackets is quite comfortable. The shoulders are big and square, moreso because the sleeve tops are wider than
average, so the jacket feels easy to move around in.
We have a new knit maker, and this is one of a shipment of mid-brown we had made. The wool is custom-dyed to mid-brown, and the
strength, weave, and solidness of these knits is spectacular. No other knit which we've used is as good as these are.
A very special thanks to the amazing Jorge Aguilera, who allowed us to borrow the original Cable Raincoat A-2.
The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'10" to 6'1", with a chest of 42" to 43", and a weight of about 180-205 pounds.
